About the Montessori Method

The Montessori dementia care method is rooted in the educational philosophies of Dr. Maria Montessori, originally developed for children. Dr. Cameron Camp recognized that these principles could be effectively adapted to dementia care. The Montessori approach emphasizes uncovering and supporting the individual behind the dementia by offering meaningful activities and environments tailored to each person's needs, interests, history, skills, and abilities.

The Montessori dementia care method prioritizes creating opportunities for success. Designing accessible environments where individuals can succeed in various ways is central to this approach. Success is a personal experience— for one person, it may mean preparing a favorite meal with minimal assistance; for another with advanced dementia, it could involve enjoying the sensory and social aspects of eating a favorite dish. By tailoring activities to each individual, the focus is on meeting people where they are, rather than pushing them to engage in activities they dislike or cannot do.

It is vital to recognize that people living with dementia are adults who want and deserve to feel valued and retain as much autonomy as possible. Maximizing independence comes from combining freedom of movement and choice with a true care partnership. While the terms "caregiving" and "caretaking" are sometimes necessary, they can suggest passivity or a lack of agency for the person with dementia. Instead, the aim should be to partner with each individual, respecting their life and preferences. Encouraging engagement through a person-centered partnership helps alleviate boredom and loneliness, nurture a sense of purpose and routine, and build self-confidence.

Many people wonder how the Montessori method differs from other dementia care techniques. This seminar addresses these differences through informative content, facilitated discussions, real-life case examples, and practical tips that highlight the unique features of the Montessori approach.
